Get Set Go with S.M.A.R.T. Goals
For any organization to succeed, goals are very important to be set. Many times we set our goals, feel like we are working really hard, consistently but still reaching nowhere… This can be the reason for our pattern of working. In the past few years, I came across something called SMART goals by my mentor Mr. Raag Sethi while I was doing my personal project for my professional development. He very beautifully explained the meaning of the SMART goal that has helped me from then onward, to focus on detailing and achieving the goal.
What is a SMART Goal????
SMART goals mean we should have clarity of our ideas, focus on our efforts, use of time and resources productively, and increase our chances of achieving what we want in life. SMART means:
S: Specific (simple, significant, sensible)
M: Measurable (meaningful and motivating)
A: Achievable (agreed, attainable)
R: Reliable (reasonable, realistic, result-based)
T: Timely (time-limited, time-based)
To achieve something, it very important to set a SMART goals for better results. Further, how do we define each element??? Let me share my insights…
S: Specific: Our goal should be very clear and specific and make sure that the effort that you make is in its direction. While framing our goal, a good idea is to ask all “W” questions i.e. What, why, who, where, which.
E.g. what do I want to accomplish?
Why this goal is important?
Who all are involved in this process?
Where is it located?
Which resources are required?
M: Measurable: To track progress while working and stay motivated, the goal should be measurable. Which means the goal should be a short term goal that can be tracked. Tracking the progress and evaluating it at short intervals helps in meeting deadlines and completing the task without any burden. Always keep asking how much? How many? And how will I? Questions
A: Achievable: For a goal to be successful, we need to set an achievable/attainable goal that is realistic and not that is impossible. An achievable goal will push us to move out of our comfort zone but at the same time, it will still remain possible. This will help to look at all the factors affecting the achievement of the goal. #Hot Spots and #Bright Spots.
R: Reliable: It is that step which ensures our goal matters to us, and that it also aligns with other goals. We all need support and assistance in achieving our goals, but it’s important to retain control over them. So, make sure that the plans drive everyone forward, but that we are still responsible for achieving our own goal.
Questions to be asked to self:
- Does this goal seem worth it?
- Is this the right time?
- Does this match our other efforts/needs?
- Am I the right person to reach this goal?
- Is it applicable in the current socio-economic environment?
T: Timely: Set a target date of when will you achieve that goal. Setting a target date/deadline will help work towards it focused. It helps to work on Urgent vs. important goals.
Questions to be asked to self:
- When do I want to achieve this goal?
- What is my plan for six months from now?
- What is my monthly plan?
- What is my weekly plan?
- What is my today’s plan?

It can be implemented into any industry be it I.T or Education or Accountancy, Engineering, etc. When we use SMART, we can create clear, attainable, and meaningful goals, and develop the motivation, action plan, and support needed to achieve them.
